On the other side of the nakago, inscribed in gold, is the Buddhist mantra, a main precept of Nichiren Buddhism:  Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyô.

About the MEI, on one side and visible in one photo indicates "MI" written as 3 horizontal bars...and on the other side (in pure gold inlay), is the Buddhist mantra which reads as NAMYO-HO-RENGE-KYO, one of the precepts of Nichiren Buddhism.
Nichiren declared that to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo was to activate its promise of universal enlightenment. The practice of prolonged chanting is referred to as shōdai (唱題) while the purpose of chanting daimoku ( this mantra) is to reduce sufferings by eradicating negative karma along with reducing karmic punishments both from previous and present lifetimes.
